What to do when meeting rails on old double hung windows don't meet?

Old windows can be a constant source of frustration. They can leak. They may allow cold drafts to creep in. They sometimes need repainting. They are less secure. And worst of all are those problems involving stuck windows, or double hung windows in which the rails don’t meet. How do you overcome that annoying situation where the meeting rails fail to come together?  

This may not be the answer you prefer, but your best option is to replace the entire window. Not only will you solve the first problem, but also you will also prevent future problems and increase your home’s value, energy efficiency and ultimately save money. If replacing the window is neither in your budget nor best interests for the present, there are other things that you may attempt. One is to check the tracks in the window frame. Make sure that they are free from obstructions. Also, make sure that the window itself is fully set into the tracks. It may also be prudent to inspect the meeting rails themselves, replacing them if necessary.
