Where’s the best place to begin when you’re remodeling your kitchen? Assuming that at some point, everything in the kitchen is going to get a facelift, what should you start with?

As a preliminary, you need to determine if you’re going to change the arrangement of the kitchen itself. If you think you may knock down a wall, move some plumbing or rewire everything, you should take care of that first. If a tamer remodel is part of your plan, you should start with the cabinetry.

New cabinets will be one of the most expensive components of a whole-kitchen remodel. Having a new set installed is a custom task that requires time and effort, so getting it completed before everything else is a smart first move. Painting, lighting, flooring and countertop installation are “extras” that should be done after the cabinets move in. Cabinets are the single most space-consuming component of your kitchen, and once you have them installed, you will feel like you’re halfway done.
